A Request For Moisturizers

How are you all doing. A friend texted me ‘Happy hump day’ and now I just hear an annoying camel in my head…Did you have a good weekend?.  I hibernated some, hiked some, and wished I was at A Night For Green Beauty and IAMPETH (calligraphy) conference. I’m pretty sure being fiscally responsible and not jetting off to L.A. and Indianapolis for green beauty and calligraphy events is supposed to feel more satisfying than it did (what you didn’t know I was a calligrapher/hand letterer?!).

Over this weekend I got an email from my beloved friend Joanie asking for “…a good facial moisturizer that’s green? I’m looking for something that also smells good and hopefully reasonably priced”.  She, like many people wanted a cream and not an oil which is baffling to many a die hard green beauty rehaber which narrowed down some options, and while there are many creams that don’t smell, or don’t have scented oils in them that work great, she wanted something that was going to have that additional olafactory punch.

I went through my List of well priced smelly moisturizers and came up with a good selection which I’ve listed below!

farm to girl -ORGANIC CITRUS KOKOLOTION

Launched in 2013, Farm to Girl is a company of women scientists and nurses dedicated to empowering, uplifting and supporting women farmers, villagers, entrepreneurs and small sustainable farms both globally and locally. They’re an American (Austin , TX) Company created by Dr. Kim Warren-Rhodes who has incredible academic track record(a Ph.D from Stanford to start!) and friend, Kristen Pokky, who worked in remote countries like the Solomon Islands, Namibia and Micronesia—where Farm to Girl now sources many of their ingredients. Farm to Girl also gives back 20% of profits to women’s health and education. On top of all of that greatness…They’re so affordable, if you’re just starting to replace products , or test new ones, this is a great place to start, clean out the toxic ingredients and get handcrafted , incredible products! Great, clean, ethically sourced ingredients/products? YUP. fancy social media campaign/marketing campaign? NOPE. Another great resource if you’re in the process of switching out your medicine cabinet.

elaa superfood dream cream

First things first…elää is a Finnish word meaning “to be alive.” While the Finnish word is pronounced “ellaaa,” here it is eeela or e-laa. In my head I just sing the Rhianna ‘umbrella’s’ song knowing this is both annoying and incorrect. The point is, the name takes getting used to, the products? NOPE. I was initially introduced to this brand by Megan of Seed To Serum, who is the queen at discovering new brands and describing them in ways that you want to purchase them immedaitely. Megan, thank you for destroying my bank account…(JK). Elaa is a comprehensive company in the sense that it’s all about incredble products that tie you to your inner self and the outer earth around you. We all like green beauty for this reason, and Elaa embodies it.  They also talk a lot of thriving, not just living, which reminds me of a quote from the late, great Maya Angelou “Surviving is important, Thriving is elegant.”

Packed full of the most nutritious and powerful superfoods like Goji Berry, Cacao, Chaga & Reshi, Spirulina, Acai, Mangosteen, Baobab, and Camu Camu, this cream is like an ultra-nutritious smoothie for your skin. $15 - $50
Packed full of the most nutritious and powerful superfoods like Goji Berry, Cacao, Chaga & Reshi, Spirulina, Acai, Mangosteen, Baobab, and Camu Camu, this cream is like an ultra-nutritious smoothie for your skin. $15 – $50

This cream has wildcrafted and organic products, in luxe micron glass, and 13 on point ingredients, health coaching; and of course my favorite feature? MULTIPLE SIZES AND SAMPLES ARE AVAILABLE!!! I can’t tell you how many times I look at a green beauty site and yell “you want me to drop $100 bucks then let me sample damn it!”

Mad Hippie Face Cream Antioxidant-Rich Peptide Face Cream

One of the best reason’s I love Mad Hippie as a company?  This is one the first thing they say on their about us page: ” Unfortunately, the beauty care industry is riddled with companies that are strictly profit-minded & willing to fill their products with anything if it is cheap, regardless of the health consequences to the consumer. Call us hippies, but we just don’t feel that’s right.” Well HOT DAMN call me a hippie too! Wanting to make a profit is not a bad thing, but doing so at any cost with disregard to women’s health and under a board of mostly men. YEAH I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. Deep breath Sue…

This is only one aspect of the company, but they’re worth a perusing through of their products and pages.

Packed to the brim with peptides and actives, our face cream is formulated to kick-start collagen production while Mother Nature’s best antioxidants neutralize aging free radicals. *Awarded Best Facial Moisturizer in Natural Solutions Magazine’s Beauty with a Conscience Awards $25.99

This is another product packed with 14 power ingredients that work on everything from hydration to anti-aging. Don’t forget, they’re an American Company based out of Portland,Maine and I’m Yankee so you know I love me some Maine.

Tastyface Organics Vanilla Mint Daily Moisturizer

The name says it all right? Tasty face? with products good enough you can eat, for me, their scent combonations are on.the.nose.  Case in point? the moisturizer! Mint and Vanilla, that sounds like the worlds best gelato flavor never mind skin care product.  I’m pretty sure combing this with my favorite Camilla and Rose cleanser would make me go over the deep end (and I wouldn’t want to come back!). Other great examples? Their earthy toner which is Rosemary & Aloe, a serum of Argan & Sweet Orange.

Mind blower. Creamy, clean refreshment and moisture. This moisturizer is ultra soothing. Smells amazing, easily absorbed, and most importantly - no junk. Organic coconut, sweet almond and jojoba oils, raw organic shea butter and soothing aloe vera. Finished with refreshing peppermint $29

Last but not least, while it’s packed with great products, it’s a fairly simple company. There aren’t 40,000 products to choose from. There’s one or two, and everything is reasonably priced. SCHWING…nope I’ll stick with- BOOM.

Pratima – BOTANICAL MOISTURE CREAM

On the other end of the spectrum is the ayurvedic Pratima Skincare.  They’re a skin care company that I want to explore more of, but they have a HUGE range of products.  Moisturizers? SEVEN. But this isn’t just a random seven, they’re collection while large, is carefully curated to fit the needs of your skin, and here’s the best feature, they help you find your type of skin. NO GUESSING. phew. Each of their products has notes for what kind of skin you have (‘combo, oily, dry, etc.) like all other stores, but you can also find your Dosha (from their website: According to Ayurveda, each individual and all of nature is comprised of the five fundamental elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These elements uniquely design each one of us, creating a distinct blueprint known as our Dosha.).  Don’t know your dosha (neither did I, much to my surprise there’s no dosha for bookworm who likes to eat chocolate. WEIRD)..they’ve got your back: go take their test! I SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS!!!!

This light, non-clogging moisturizer with vitamins A and E and botanicals Fennel, Comfrey, Sweet Orange and Rose work to hydrate and leave skin soothed, soft and supple. $36

I LOVE this, because it takes into account what kind of person you are and how that’s reflected in your skin. It’s the same principle of: stress/dehydration/smile lines/activity all shows in your skin. It reflects the idea that a skin is a part of your whole, not just something to fix.

Juice Beauty GREEN APPLE™ SPF 15 Moisturizer

Last, but certainly not least is Juice Beauty. When Joanie mentioned that she wanted it to smell good, I knew I’d be visiting them.  One of my favorite products is there toner, just because the smell is so uplifting and vibrant. Here’s why I love this cream. 1.) easy to use tube. throw that sucker anywhere. purse, desk, drawer, beside table, dog cage. WHATEVER it’s easy to move and bring with you. 2.)It’s an award winning product that combines chemical-free, broad-spectrum sun protection with age-defying peptides, DMAE, alpha lipoic acid, Co Q10 and organic fruit antioxidants to revitalize and protect for optimum age-defying benefits. 3.) SUNSCREEN!!!! yup, moisturizer and sun screen in one. You know why it’s important, and when you think about the cost including a moisturizer AND sunscreen…BOOM

Revitalize and protect with this multi tasking lightweight daily moisturizer that combines chemical-free, broad-spectrum sun protection with age-defying peptides, DMAE, alpha lipoic acid, Co Q10 and organic fruit antioxidants to revitalize and protect for optimum age-defying benefits. $38

    1. Your local whole foods may have the juice line so you can check it out there. Also some Ultas carry it and they let you return stuff. I lean towards the pratima myself.

  1. Sue, thank you so much for including TastyFace Organics in this article. And I’m sorry for my delayed response in seeing this! We’re happy to send you other full size samples to try out if you like! 🙂
