So at this point your skin is glowing from you green foundation with bright eyes using green mascara and a smacker covered in the green color of you choice. Fantastic!
You’re washing all of this off with clean products right….?
You’re exfoliating with green products right….?
You’re nourishing your skin with green serums right…?
You’re moisturizing with something amazing and clean right….?
OK I’ll stop being a dick, but let me say this first:
This blog is NOT about making you feel bad, or trying to get you to spend money on things you don’t need.
However, it is SO SO important to CARE for your body correctly.
To support businesses that do the work to research and great amazing products without cutting corners that in the long run hurt you, the economy, and the planet.
Makeup is about expression and fun and illusion, but it will always looks better on good skin. And your good skin is really all about your health, which is whats most important no matter which way you slice it. So first on the quick change list? Cleanser. If you can’t get the makeup off, even if it’s good makeup, it’s only going to create buildup and problems in the end.
First can we talk about face wash images?
While looking for images for this post, below is an example of what the majority I found looked like:
No one washes their face like this, this is in fact a terrible way to wash your face. It is an amazing way to wash your floors though
What about these:
I see some WEIRD things when I Google images for these posts my people, but that’s for another time…
What are some of the harmful ingredients in cleansers?
Microbeads: If you haven’t seen my post on why tiny plastic particles are bad for you and your skin and environment, check out this previous post HERE.
Fragrance: The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. IT IS A KNOWN HUMAN TOXICANT OR ALLERGEN. How can we ever replace these ingredients since there’s nothing in nature that smells fragrant that can be used?!?!?!….(too subtle?)
Sodium Laureth/Laurel Sulfate: It has been established that it can cause severe epidermal changes to the area where it is applied that, theoretically, could increase the chances of cancer. If you have the suspicion that washing your face is making your skin dry, or that shampooing is giving you an itchy scalp or making your eyes sting, or that cleaning your teeth is giving you mouth ulcers, sodium lauryl sulfate is the likely culprit (well spoken description from HERE)
All toxic, and all very unnecessary. This partial ingredient list came from L’oreal’s Go 360 Clean Deep Facial Cleanser. This cleanser had TWENTY ONE ingredients in it. TWENTY.ONE. half of them were for chemical fragrances too!!! Don’t even get me started on who’s making money off this either.
Cleanser is important. You need at least one (that’s right , at least one) to wash away the days dirt, dog kisses (don’t judge), makeup, sunscreen, and pen you accident get on your face, or in my case calligraphy ink.
There are some AMAZING green cleansers out there, they are nourishing for your skin, remove all dirt, grime and dog saliva (I SAID NO JUDGING), and don’t harm the environment when you wash it away.
What are some of my favorites? Thank you so much for asking that was incredibly kind of you!
Pai Camellia & Rose Hydrating Cleansing Cream ($50 for 100 ml): Bursting with Omega 3 & Vitamins A, B & E, it replenishes the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving it soft and supple. I have relationship that borders on unhealthy with this cleanser. I like the traditional ‘cream’ formula versus the gels or oils, but the smell is what does it for me. It comes with a very good muslin cloth that I mostly use in the evenings with my oils. My favorite way to use this product is to mix in an exfoliant in my morning showers and inhale and scrub and cleanse.
One Love Organics Active Moisture Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil & Makeup Remover ($38): The ultimate in multi-tasking luxury,it lifts away impurities and makeup while restoring skin’s natural moisture and pH balance. The unique, creamy formula features papain, a fruit enzyme that helps to exfoliate and soften skin, and a natural Vitamin B complex to detoxify and tone. Concentrated yet gentle enough for all skin types. A cult classic, everyone and there mom loves this product and for good reason. Oil cleansing is a whole post onto itself, but it’s the best way to remove EVERYTHING (e’erthing including mascara) and leave the skin baby-butt smooth.
Carrier Oils ($ varies, but usually on the lower side): Camellia Seed, Avocado, Jojoba, Meadowfoam Seed, Coconut, Olive Oil, I could go on… Oil is a great cleanser because it can break through tougher products like sunscreen and attracts the oil from your oil (like attracts like). Oil is also great because it wont dry your skin out and has a long shelf life. Oils can be found online on the big online stores discussed earlier in the blog HERE, Mountain Rose Herbs, or in your grocery store. The important thing about oils is how they’re sourced. Heat kills the good bits(scientific term), so you mostly want cold-pressed or saponified. ‘Refined’, or if it lacks the ‘virgin’ (HA) claim, means that it has been refined AKA processed and many of it’s good bits are removed. Finally, look for where it’s sourced. Locally sourced, or fair trade sourced is where it’s at my friends. Someone had to harvest those products, you want to know where and by whom.
Black Chicken Remedies Cleanse My Face – Organic purifying oil cleanser($60): It is completely natural and free of any toxic chemicals. It’s 98% organic. It works better than any commercial product leaving you with nourished, radiant skin. It leaves your skin protected and healthy resulting in fewer breakouts, less wrinkling, and better tone. Cleanse my face also replenishes them with antibacterial, antioxidant and super hydrating medicinal oils. This product is new to me, but I love a lot about it. The scent is amazing. It’s like…Forest musk; That’s the best I got. Another great review on it can be found HERE. The only thing I don’t like the pump dispenses enough product in one pump for a hedgehog face (they’re small). I would prefer one easy pump and smoosh it on my face.
Shamanuti Activated Charcoal Cleanser ($36):This unique cleanser utilizes the properties of activated charcoal to neutralize acidity and absorb impurities as well as to gently exfoliate the skin with maple extract. This versatile product is beneficial for all skin types including sensitive or problem skin and is very effective as a treatment for reducing acne, rosacea and eczema. It works as an excellent shaving cream and deodorizing body wash. This is a little known line that should be getting more love than it does. It’s made in the US (MA), gorgeous labeling, a name that’s super fun to say, and some bad ass products. I also love they always offer smaller sizes for reasonable prices so that you can try.
- Put in on your dry face. DO.NOT.RINSE.YOUR.FACE.FIRST. It really doesn’t serve a purpose since you want the product close to the skin and product it’s taking off, and in the end just de-concentrates* (word?) your product.
- Wipe/scrub away with cloth, then immediately put cloth in laundry basket. That’s right don’t rinse it off (good luck doing that with oil and water anyway), wipe it all off, be momentarily grossed out, then wash the cloth. Don’t reuse it. Bacteria will start to grow ASAP. DO NOT PUT BACTERIA IMMEDIATELY BACK ON YOUR FACE. you will see skin problems if you continue to reuse your cloth.
- Try not to walk around like a smug jerk. This will be difficult, because your skin will be so clean and smooth and awesome but try. No one likes a smug jerk.
