Can we just talk about this Monday for 30 seconds? SWEET GENTLE JESUS I AM TIRED….I’m faking being energized this morning with a stupid amount of coffee and orange lipstick by Ilia in Voila. You can check out the proof in my awkward instagram picture today. OK I’m better. THANK YOU….let’s move on
So…. you’re in the store and you see something you may want to by, and you’ve committed to this new and bad-ass green lifestyle , but you have NO IDEA where to start….I give you… APPS!
(Actually, other people gave you the apps, but I give them to you …as well!)
These two apps allow you to look into information about current toxic products you use now as well as future clean products for the future:
A description from Environmental Working Group on the Skin Deep App:
How many personal-care products do you use in a day?Your grooming rituals probably include shampoo, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, lip balm, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving products (if you’re a man) and makeup (if you’re a woman)…EWG’s Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database is the world’s largest safety reference tool for personal-care products. EWG has launched this app to provide you with easy-to-navigate safety ratings at your fingertips for a wide range of products and ingredients on the market…When you know what chemicals are in the products you bring into your home and how they may affect your health and the environment, you can make informed purchasing decisions — and help transform the marketplace…This Skin Deep® app has information and online safety assessments for more than 72,000 personal care products, 2,500 brands and 9,000 ingredients…To calculate a product score, we tally the hazards of each ingredient and evaluate every product in relation to all the others in Skin Deep®. The safest products score well by both measures: a low hazard rating AND fair or better data availability.
How it works
TBR Opinion? It’s a good general resource for finding this information out, I use it to find out information that’s within the products I use rather than if a product is good or not, which I really like. Why is Phenoxyethanol really bad again? check it out on the app. This app is also one small part of a larger organization that focuses on environmental health and conscious living. GET IT.
A description from Think Dirty on the App:There are hormone disruptor chemicals in many products that have been possibly linked to breast cancer. I was shocked the cosmetics industry was not regulated like the food and drug sectors. And like most women, my lip gloss and shampoo are products I would never think to describe as “toxic” or could contain cancer-causing chemicals…Finding safer alternatives for myself was a huge challenge. Although many products are labeled “all-natural” or “organic”, there is little transparency in labeling cosmetics…I wanted to develop and create something not only for myself but for others as well, and that’s how Think Dirty® was founded…Think Dirty® empowers and educates the consumer on the cosmetics industry by allowing them to make an informed decision on what products to purchase…The mobile app launched in Summer 2013 with more than 55,200 products listed…, Think Dirty® is more than just a mobile app – it’s a consumer revolution for safer cosmetics by learning one ingredient at a time, changing to cleaner options, one product at a time.
TBR Opinion? Think Dirty is much more attractive (the designer has a design background) but (right now at least) it’s only for iphone/ipad users. It’s fun to use and create lingo with to weird people out at the bar “what’s that lipstick on your ‘Dirty Meter”. It’s also got over 70,000 products in it’s database and constantly growing. GET IT.
UPDATE: I just tweeted with the Think Dirty App, I’m so popular (lies) and she said that they are aiming for private beta in summer. You can sign up for updates on our Facebook page.
No matter which one you choose, they’re great to have on hand.
